File shares refers to centralized file hosting on a network server or a network drive or shared files or disks on a local computer.
Often referred to as a “P Drive” on networked computers, Personal drives are a shared drive somewhere on the network.
Users have traditionally used these drives for documents they are working on – before sharing them, downloads, pictures, desktop files(often referred to as known Folders)
Previously they were also used to store PST files, local copies of their emails.
P drives were also used to allow users to carry key files as local copies on a laptop, for example, to work offline before synchronizing back to the network once able.
File Shares are used to allow users to collaborate on common files, controlling access to those files and folders.
An example might be a repository of Humans Resource files which are produced and edited by the members of the HR team but can be read by any user.
Organizations can now leverage the cloud storage offerings in M365 to upload all P Drive and File Share content to One Drive and or SharePoint online.
